Words from the Gallery
With highly skilled alterations of form, colour and carving Chris Fisher RPT creates highly evocative art, art which gives movement to the static, sound to the silent, and joy to the touch.
Chris transforms our own visual perception with his creations, manipulating the appearance of wood into clay, stone, metal, and also to living organisms.
Chris’ life story gives a humbling insight into how hope can triumph over adversity. Since toxoplasmosis took Chris’ sight when he was 38 wood turned art has been a saviour to his life and through self-learning, perseverance, desire and a pioneering spirit Chris has become one of the country’s leading wood turned artists. I love the way Chris constantly challenges his art to develop new techniques and new styles always excited to create a new and different pathway for his art – each new visit from Chris for me is an exciting art journey of exploration.
Pioneers pursue boundaries and great ones overcome them – this is true with Chris Fisher, his life, and his wonderful creations.
Chris Fisher has been filmed by Google and featured on BBC iPlayer’s Blind Ambition with Jamie O’Leary.
Background
Chris Fisher aka ‘The Blind Woodturner’ took up wood-turning from a desire to create a genuine vampire stake one halloween after his sight was taken from him. Through this he started an incredible journey to turn his world around and has challenged his disability, to become one of the leading artists in the field of wood turning. His desires overcame his depressions and Chris, through his art and his charitable work for others has turned his disability into a positive vehicle for change in the world around him and has challenged other people’s perception on disabilities. Chris’s artworks are included in public and high profile collections around the world and he has gained a widespread media following through the ‘BBC’s Money For Nothing’ program where he is a resident artist. Chris has also been featured in other high profile BBC productions including Jamie O’Leary’s Blind Ambition which can also be viewed on the BBC iPlayer.
