The reverence found in traditional japanese studio ceramics has been a fundamental benchmark for the quality of Alex’s art. Attention to detail and the intuitive connection with form and feature is a signature of his work, wether it be monumental vessel or micro bud vase the loving care and mastery of touch remains.
Background
Studio Ceramics runs through the veins of Alex Shimwell and you would be hard pressed to find a more passionate exponent of his art. From the age of 5 Alex’s love for the potter’s wheel has magnified through self-learning and from studies at the internationally renowned ceramics course at Stoke University.
Under the separate guidance from master ceramicist Kevin Millward Alex enhanced the core principles of his craft, develeoped his key skills and direction – this culminated in a visit to Japan and a study of Hiroki Numaguchi (7th Generation Jomon and Haniwa Potter).
Armed with these rich foundations Alex is now himself a master of his art, sculpting and shaping revered traditional Japanese vessels, lately transcending into flashes of fire and flood in his ragged contemporary ‘torn’ series.
